It's an interactive video game. The story is what you play. The fact that marketing has a preference is not the determining factor.

Generally where this mentality leads is DC rebooting the fictional history of its comic books to make it "make sense"...and then keeps patching the continuity holes this and each successive fix created in a never-ending nerd ouroboros. And generally the stories aren't even good either.

BTW, 'Star Trek' (2009) made a mistake trying to explain the new continuity with time-travel. Just launch a new universe and quit catering to nerds desire to have it "all make sense." Star Trek's own internal continuity doesn't make sense.

There are times when this sort of question matters to a story, but it really doesn't with a long-running film series that has pretty loose continuity, mostly standalone movies, and was clearly rebooted with CASINO ROYALE.

Bond's lore that matters is that he works for MI6, gets his orders from M, gets his gadgets from Q, and has a dead wife from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" which comes up from time to time.

What's depressing is seeing a professional writer buy into this non-problem.
