Once I asked my mom about what it was like to grow up as a teen in the 1950’s in the #RGV where Mexicanos had been lynched, deported just for being Brown, expelled for speaking Spanish - “we kept singing, we spoke Spanish mijo, we prayed, we cooked, because sometimes, una oración was all we had.”

Please don’t look away- local leadership needs to be held accountable. Their job is to inform, advocate and play the long game- it’s about improving conductions, even if it means it cost more now- if they had worked to inform the community, all those years ago, think of the lives it could save now.

Sometimes the work as a writer is a quiet movement: it’s building a teach-in supporting students + teachers dealing with ice and book bans or writing lesson plans for a Latino poetry anthology. I’ll be at a protest, but most times I am writing for a cause. #MidNightWriteClub
