Given everything else we’ve got going on , this entirely expected bit of pending mortality has been harder for me to deal with than usual. We’ve lost pets before, but this time it stings in advance.

Now he’s fur and bones, his kidneys are failing despite altering his diet, he has irritable bowels, a heart murmur, arthritis and a bad tooth we can’t extract because he’d die under an anesthesia. I find him laying in the bathtub, a place he would have never deigned to be before.

Java is close to 16 years old, as far as we can reckon. He was a kitteen when he chose me, tapping me on the shoulder from behind from his enclosure at the SPCA. He gives no fucks anymore. He has been in decline for over a year, and now he doesn’t even complain when I pick him up.
