We also find that this sublinear model is consistent with several well-known macroecological patterns, recovering production-biomass scaling across ecosystems, as well as the species abundance distribution, mean-variance scaling, and size-density scaling.

We considered competitive communities where each population grows sublinearly with respect to its density and competes linearly. We show that increases in diversity enhance stability in this model. This is robust to alternative assumptions and generalized modeling frameworks.

The bigger the system, the longer the effective distances needed to attain high switching capacity. Microbial systems that exhibit periodicity displayed effective distances optimal for a specific number of taxa.
March 4, 2024 at 10:03 AM
If the distances become effectively too short it becomes analogous to disorder, whereas if the distances become too long it becomes analogous to order. Microbial systems exhibit intermediate distances that increase their switching capacity.
March 4, 2024 at 10:02 AM
Transitions from one composition to another are proportional to the size of feasibility domains (compatible environmental conditions) and inversely proportional to their distance in environmental parameter space.
March 4, 2024 at 10:02 AM
Microbial systems can be characterized by structured transitions mapping the continuous space of environmental conditions to a discrete qualitative space of possible microbial compositions.
