Yeah, chicken of the woods is parasitic. And saprotrophic. It is infecting the tree. The good news is that it usually takes a long time (its a slow parasitization), so the tree might still live 10-20 years more (and produce the mushroom all that time 🤞). Eventually though the tree will die.

Could be - would need to see the gills and possibly do a spore print. If the gills have any green or yellow in them, that's it
