A childhood friend, who asked to be identified only as Muhammad because he feared Taliban reprisals, said that Mr. Lakanwal had suffered from mental health issues and was disturbed by the casualties his unit had caused.
Mr. Lakanwal was raised in a village in the province of Khost in southeastern Afghanistan, growing up in a country at war. At some point, he joined a Zero Unit, according to a person briefed on the investigation and an Afghan intelligence officer familiar with the matter. Zero Units, which were formally part of the Afghan intelligence service but operated outside the usual chain of command, were largely recruited, trained, equipped and overseen by the C.I.A., according to Human Rights Watch. These units specialized in night raids and clandestine missions; Taliban officials and human rights groups described them as "death squads." Human Rights Watch said it had documented several instances in which the units were responsible for "extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances, indiscriminate airstrikes, attacks on medical facilities, and other violations of international humanitarian law." The C.I.A. has denied such allegations of brutality, saying they were the result of Taliban propaganda. Mr. Lakanwal's unit was based in Kandahar, a city that was devastated by bombings and assassinations during the war. According to an intelligence officer, one of Mr. Lakanwal's brothers was the unit's deputy commander. The commemoration took place at Harvey Milk Plaza at the corner of Castro and Market streets. The gathering was organized by the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club. Among the speakers were San Francisco Drag Laureate Per Sia; Milk Club Co-President Reid Coggins and vice presidents Ajai Duncan and Brad Joseph Chapin; San Francisco AIDS Foundation CEO Tyler TerMeer; and Carol Ruth Silver, former San Francisco Supervisor and friend of Harvey Milk. Carol Ruth Silver, who was friends with Harvey Milk and served with him on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She said that she had been to every candlelight vigil since the march held on the night of the assassinations. Mayor Moscone died just three days after his 49th birthday. Harvey Milk was 48 years old. Dianne Feinstein, who was President of the Board of Supervisors at the time, delivered the heartbreaking announcement live on TV and radio: "As President of the Board of Supervisors, it's my duty to make this announcement. Both Mayor [George] Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed. The suspect is Supervisor Dan White." That night, thousands gathered for a candlelight vigil and march beginning outside Harvey Milk's camera shop at 575 Castro Street, making their way up Market Street to the steps of City Hall-a quiet, powerful tribute to two leaders whose lives were cut short. My Gratitude Post...
GRATITUDE, EXTREME EDITION. I know I'm pretty blessed. I've gotten a chance to hang out with this guy for an additional 3 years. When I moved back to Albuquerque I thought it was heading towards a funeral. He broke his hip and then went to rehab & got covid. Back to the VA & got pneumonia. back to rehab and got covid again. back to the VA and pneumonia again. then to hospice. And then he decided not to die! picture of an old man in the hospital and same man happily eating at home. What a difference a year makes! July 2022 May 2023 (back story: Dad graduated from Hospice mid-Dec and came home to live. He has been steadily increasing his strength and balance. not bad for a 90yr old blind guy!) now 92!
