It’s called corner to corner (C2C). You just keep building up little square blocks diagonally until you get the dimensions you want and then start decreasing to close it off.
It’s also used to make some pretty cool pixelated pictures too. Took me a year to build up the courage to try the HP crest.

My Rupert. It’s been quite a few years since we lost home but he is still the best cat I’ve ever known. He had manners unlike the common farm cats I was used to. We got him when we lived on the east coast. We said he was a city slicker cat.
