This month is deeply personal for me as a late discovered AFAB Autistic. For most of my life I was in therapy to receive treatment for chronic depression + anxiety, but struggled to identify and articulate my feelings on why I felt the way I did. Without the proper tools or language to describe my experience, I dove deeper into feelings of isolation, shame, and self-loathing. Since learning about my Autism, I've begun to work through past traumas from a new lens of self acceptance and understanding. (continued) It allows me grace to recognize my limits, for example, like when I may need to disengage and have nonverbal time to avoid a meltdown. It also brings clarity towards why I struggle with overstimulation, missing social cues, and executive dysfunction. I finally understand why certain special interest shows and hobbies bring me so much joy, as well as how certain behaviors (aka stims) calm me. In learning to be more acutely aware of my own needs, I'm able to handle more than I have in the past. Still, it's important to recognize where treatment options are still lacking within healthcare; as I currently do not have the support I need to truly thrive. Finding community of fellow Autistic individuals has helped me feel more accepted, and more importantly, understood in a way I've never experienced before. I struggle to have sustained focus with my streaming journey. Consistency is hard. I have grandiose ideas, but almost always have trouble executing them effectively. It's also difficult to connect with other creators who are not Autistic, as I can never truly tell the intention behind their words/actions. Oftentimes in the past, I was teased for certain traits. I didn't realize those people were laughing at me, rather than with me. I also, as a facecam streamer, feel compelled to mask often on stream. If I'm not constantly smiling people may think I'm upset or mad. Still, there's plenty to be grateful for. Being open about my Autism has allowed others who are still discovering for themselves to resonate with my experience, and in turn learn more about themselves. Autism Acceptance Month is a way to celebrate the various experiences of being autistic by spreading autistic joy and validation. How does autism impact your streaming and content creation? It is a bit more difficult for me to meet the same standards of content creation in comparison to allistic creators. For example, I might not as consistent with my content, and my communication skills may make it difficult to engage with my audience at times.

As a late diagnosed autistic person Autism Acceptance month holds a special place in my heart as it took a long time to truly accept myself. I didn’t have a good support system growing up. Finding folks in the autistic community that took time to educate, uplift and support me has been life giving. It is also a great time to celebrate and share education about the wide variety of autistic experiences. Being a creative person is deeply linked to my joy as well as how I engage with the world around me. Streaming at first was challenging as an autistic person and still is some days. I thought for a long time that I had to be on camera to be a streamer despite it being inaccessible to me on several levels. Finding the Vtuber community opened up a world of creativity I could engage with. It allowed me to stream in a way that was more accessible for me. It also connected me with a deep joy of creating a fun, comfy supportive space for folks in my disabled and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

To me Autism Acceptance Month is a way for us to educate {not only Non-Autistic people} but also younger autistic folk that may not have the words to describe themselves. It gives us the spotlight {albeit momentarily} to get the info across that we aren’t some weird people that are trying to be difficult. We’re our own humans whose brains just work differently & that’s okay! We can still have community & should be allowed to take up space in ways that are accessible for our specific Neurodivergences! On the negative side: It makes it difficult for me to connect with some folk as a lot of the ways I communicate are seen as “strange”, “rude” or very “kill-joy" like. I have a strong Sense of Justice which can come across as unreasonable or like I’m trying to ruin people's fun in certain situations. I also use tone indicators heavily & often need to clarify on streams whether someone is saying something as a joke or not which some people have claimed is “strange” & “ruins the fun of jokes”. (continued) On the positive side: these exact same issues have ensured that my community has become the safe & accessible space it is today. The strong Sense of Justice is helping me ensure my community is full of people who want to do right by each other & the rest of the world. As well as actually introduced tone indicators to others who now use them & find its improved their communication wonderfully. This month shows me I’m not alone, and there are others as young as i am with the same issues. It gives me a community to ask questions, and get help with my own problems. How does limb loss impact your streaming and content creation? It affects streaming as sometimes my phantom pain acts up, and my body visibly jerks/twitches because of it. I have to change positions I’m sitting in a lot, and can’t stream on the days my nerve pain is super bad because of how much it affects my body.

Being autistic while streaming can be a struggle because i don’t understand certain jokes, and i can’t tell if someone is being mean to me. I can’t play certain games and HAVE to play games a certain way, which causes backseating. But autism acceptance means to me that I’m not alone, and that there are others like me and that doesn’t mean someone won’t enjoy my content.

Finding out I was Autistic as an adult completely reframed many things that happened as I was growing up, and has allowed me personally to better accept myself. All Autistic people deserve the same kind of acceptance both from others and themselves, and having a month dedicated to being Autistic provides additional framework for that. I have a lot of sensory sensitivities as an Autistic individual and those have hindered my ability to connect with some fellow streamers who have more interactive and active streams while simultaneously opening my eyes to curating an environment I can thrive in, and that I hope others will find comforting for their own needs. It's also been such a joy to share things like stims, sensitivities, and hyperfixations with members of my community.

To me, this month is about learning to accept all autistic folks across the spectrum of how they present in the world, no matter their level of needs of support. Highlighting acceptance > awareness has always been an important change that meant a shift in moving away from forced conversion of autistic folks. I’m constantly being questioned about my emotions, tone, and more due to my intentional decisions not to mask in the spaces I’ve created online, as autism makes me a monotone and blank expression person unless I’m very excited. It also makes it very hard to network online. But I’ve been able to find community and build close connections with people regardless, and I think that is a very valuable part of being openly autistic!
