"The plan can still be altered, you do not have to do this." Ferdinand meant well, Dorothea had not doubt about it, but it just showed he didn't understand a thing. She swiped the letter from her father from the table. He had a lot of nerve trying to claim her as his family after everything she and her mother had gone through. He must've suspected that he would come under scrutiny due to his ties to some of the houses that worked with Those Who Slither in the Dark, and that were falling like dominoes now that the war of unification had ended. He truly believed she would protect him. She tossed the letter back on the table, fighting the urge to wipe her hands on her skirts. "Hubie would tell you that it's the most elegant solution." "Precisely." Hubert clasped his hands behind his back. "As an invited guest, Dorothea will have a valuable opportunity to gather intel before any further action is taken." A pause. "That said, there is merit to what Ferdinand is saying. The idea of striking down one's blood relation might be… distasteful to some, and I would not hold it against you if you changed your mind." Ferdinand's face lit up. "I knew you would come to appreciate my perspective!" Hubert nodded slightly. "There are, indeed, situations where a more compassionate point of view is valuable, and I would be remiss not to acknowledge that much." "It warms my heart to know that we are in such perfect accord. Trust me, I do understand that your duty demands pragmatism, and therefore-" Dorothea rolled her eyes. "If you two won't help me plan this assassination, then at least get a room." Leaving them both sputtering, she turned to the fourth member of their little conspiracy, her lips drawn into a tight line. "Will you try to talk me out of this too?" Jeritza shook his head. He was to pose as her fiancé, providing an extra blade or four should something go wrong. "Why would I? The wait is already interminable." He leaned against the doorframe and crossed his arms, eyes half-lidded with some secret delight. "I know peacetime hasn't dulled your instincts, songstress. I will savour the kill almost as though it were my own." His eyes widened, suddenly alert. "You will let me watch. That must be a part of the deal."

what about Bernie and Jeritza... their potential dynamic is so intriguing to me For the first few hours following his sudden appearance at the Varley estate, Jeritza didn't say a word. In a flash of inspiration, Bernadetta picked up the discarded Death Knight's helmed, and held it out to him. Though the blood had been mostly wiped off, it still felt strangely heavy. He took it from her, but didn't put it on. Instead, he looked down, as if trying to meet the Death Knight's eyes. "I..." he began, his voice strangled, as though he was unaccustomed to speaking. Maybe that was the case. He'd never been one for conversation, and he'd vanished for so many years all but few assumed he'd perished in the line of duty to the Empire. "I didn't know where else to go."

On one hand, Ferdinand was his treasure. Industrious, devoted, loving, and indescribably beautiful. On the other hand, he was an early riser. Hubert was weighing those two facts against each other as they tumbled through the imperial gardens at the crack of dawn, dew slipping under his boots. He was given a rather heavy basket to carry, with the instructions not to peek inside. Ferdinand, for his part, chose to go barefoot, clutching his sandals in one hand, while the other was firmly holding Hubert's. They walked past the greenhouses, left the pampered flowerbeds behind, and then Ferdinand abandoned the paths entirely, and led Hubert into the peach orchards. The branches were heavy with clusters of pale pink blossoms, casting a lacework of shadows on the damp grass, and the blanket spread on the ground. Before Hubert could ask when he even found the time to arrange that, Ferdinand let go of his hand, seized the basket, and began to unpack what looked like... "I was thinking we could have breakfast together," he explained, "since it is so nice outside." "Why all the mystery?" Hubert asked, accepting a cup of coffee. Once the fragrance of coffee touched his nose, the early hour began to look more tolerable. His lover looked at him, wide-eyed. "Because I wanted to surprise you," he said, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. His face lit up. "Did I? Did I manage to surprise you?" Almost imperceptibly, Hubert's expression softened. "Every day," he confessed, and leaned forward to silence his treasure with a kiss, before he could start gloating.
