Just walked the 1.7 miles to my dental office. Close to home, I almost died (slipped but did not fall) outside Golf312, whose sidewalk is a slip ‘n’ slide. This is a heavily trafficked path for people trying to access the Montrose Brown Line and buses as well as businesses.

Found two fat cats yesterday evening but this morning I can’t find ´em so I think they’ve pupated but I am too unobservant to detect where they set up shop.

What could government be doing regarding technology that it isn’t? We still don’t have a federal privacy law. There is a litany of common-sense regulation proposed and past due, but I think we really need to atone for the sins of the 1990s when this business model was unleashed onto the world. It creates the conditions for many of the harms we see today: the centralized power of a handful of surveillance companies that are now also the AI companies, which resulted in the dependence of governments on these companies for surveillance for infrastructure, effectively outsourcing many of what we assume are the core functions of government. It created actors that now have, in many ways, more geopolitical power than individual nation-states. There is a need, if we want to be serious about this, to think about something like disarmament. How do you reduce the power of these actors? How do you reduce their centralized surveillance? This is world-shaping, market-making information, and how do we grapple with the fact that at this point we have powerful tools for social control of worker surveillance in the hands of private actors whose incentives will, absent radical change, be profit and growth? That’s a very dangerous configuration, and I don’t know if change will come from government because governments’ interests overlap significantly with the interests of these actors and are often entwined. But it needs to come from somewhere. — Meredith Whittaker

Why should even an entry-level editor accept this rate? Have you *seen* how much things cost? For the SF Bay Area, no less. Employers, they are de-lu-lu.

Since I last wrote I had another cat but it also seems to have disappeared. (Might be in a chrysalis right in front of me that I haven’t recognized as such.) And just now found a new baby on my lemon plant!
