Getting ready to talk with Grant @unofphoto.bsky.social about what’s happening in photography exhibitions for upcoming episode of his photography podcast See Saw — this might be an emotional one!

Is ‘Leeds Photography’ trending? “Back to Back” is an excellent new book by photographer @rickyadam.bsky.social documenting the city from 2003 on, while the “Pete Mitchell: Nothing Lasts Forever” retrospective at The Photographers Gallery (London) covers the 1970s/80s. Both highly recommended.

This week on See-Saw, the @unofphoto.bsky.social photography podcast, we discussed two exhibitions and a film — “The Face: Culture Shift”, “Peter Hujar, Eyes Open In The Darkness”, and “Ernest Cole, Lost and Found” unitednationsofphotography.com/2025/03/19/p...

French gallerist Emmanuel Perrotin opened a new location in London this week (add to his collection in Paris, NY, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Tokyo + LA) — it starts with a nice little exhibition of photographic work by the always fab JR — video here (CapCut experiment), bit more info on my IG.

To Margate to see the brilliant exhibition “Resistance: How Protest Shaped Britain and Photography Shaped Protest” at @turnercontemporary — it’s a terrific show, documenting a century of direct action, from the suffragettes in 1903 to anti-Iraq-invasion protests in 2003. More details on IG.

One of the most highly anticipated photography exhibitions this spring is “The Face Magazine: Culture Shift,” which just opened at London’s National Portrait Gallery. I visited today with some students — I have many thoughts, natch, but is there anything you’d like to know about it, Blueskyers?

Background for this week’s “A Photographic Life” podcast from @unofphoto.bsky.social - some pix from the brilliant “Linder: Danger Came Smiling” photomontage exhibition, which opened last week in London’s Hayward Gallery.

My floor this afternoon. This is why I believe print’s not dead. Also why I need more bookshelves.

It’s terrific! Brilliant image making by an astonishingly brave photographer 👇

I’m not sure how well known the V&A Museum’s Photography Centre is, but it’s always worth a visit. The 4 prints here are by Chris Killip, whose work I personally find more compelling the more I look at it. Angles, composition, light, storytelling, a real feeling of human connection—it’s all there.

Took a group of students to The Photographers Gallery (London) today for 2 brilliant exhibitions. First, Letizia Battaglia’s incredibly powerful documentary images of 1970s-80s Sicily, especially the mafia, but also kids on the streets. Her bravery (+ work ethic) never fail to astonish.

Ok, so I’ve found a blue sky red line. They’ve hidden my images from Helmut Newton’s book — not too surprising, but disappointing to find that, given what you CAN show these days, pages from 1970s Vogue Paris are still banned on social. But I am mystified by “Does not include nudity” — eh?

I’ve been sharing one of my favourite books on photography this week: “Helmut Newton, Pages From The Glossies: Facsimiles, 1956-1998.” Still one of the most useful fashion references, still full of images that shock. HN’s anecdotes still very clever and very funny.

Haven’t quite figured out image posts here yet, is it just 4 at a time? Anyhoo, this weekend I’m enjoying Vanessa Paradis, shot by Damon Baker for the Jan issue of French Marie Claire, and her daughter Lily-Rose Depp, by Karim Sadli for UK Harper’s Bazaar Feb. Classic photography + editorial design

I’m thinking maybe “Crayola Designer Minimalist”

I’m putting together a lecture on graphic design trends for my creative direction students. Need a name for this particular combo of colours/typefaces/shapes.

Hmm, Bluesky deletes are a bit hardcore. Here goes again — some pix from my original IG post on the excellent “Yevonde, Life and Colour” exhibition at the NPG in 2023, in celebration with @hundredheroines.org — Yevonde Philone Middleton, born #OTD 5 January 1893 ❤️📸

What’s on your desk, Bluesky?
On mine this soggy Sunday afternoon: prep for new term tomorrow, teaching Multimedia Production to Creative Direction students. That’s the MacBook Pro for design+presentations, bluetooth keyboard+iPad for notes, and a good old fashioned USB stick for emergencies.
