2/2 oil burning boilers and steam turbine engines.
Four electric generators powered the many electrical items on board from Radar to ovens.
Lots of warning signs as some asbestos insulation in situ but encased in fibreglass

1/2 A day with my son on Friday so we went to look at HMS Belfast.
The tower bridge was shut to traffic for a short time but it did photo bomb my picture of a signal lamp. Managed to visit most of the ship

Here is one of three sets of LED "neon" signs for Halloween visitors.
These signs are becoming quite common in many shops and many are illuminated words or phrases
I was impressed by some of the visitor costumes.

2/3 Glim.
It still works and made by general electric under the name of osglim
The base contains a current limiting resistance and it is a neon discharge lamp.
Multiple lamps within a reflector the shape of letters were used in illuminated signs but the tube style was more common from late 1920's

Glum, glim and glam.
A short thread on lighting to illuminate a little of a lighting display I put on for Halloween.
This bulb looks quite Glum with glass blackened. The spiral inside is made from iron in the shape of a straw beehive.
Made circa 1945 it is just a 5 watt power...

Tonight I enjoyed a private PowerPoint presentation on the early history of the #hammersmith #osram factory in #London
I remembered most of it from when I last presented it in 2021
Going to give it to the Berkshire Industrial Archaeology meeting on Monday.
Guests welcome

After returning some library books I had time to pop into Portsmouth museum and see their suffragette exhibition. Open until November and revealing the extent of the local campaign

On another visit I also fell in love with a couple of sailors so I just had to take them home with me.
They needed dunking in soapy water to remove the dust but now sit on my desk to check that I am getting on with my work.
Imagine they were bought from some seaside gift shop as a holiday reminder

I do love bargains and bought a bag of MR16 fire rated adjustable downlighters at the last car boot sale I visited.
Just what I needed for a future project.
Already taken off the transformers as the bulbs are 12 volt.
Didn't even haggle over the price which worked out at 15p each. Mean to haggle.

Looking at a new phone camera details
It seems to have a branded sensor but then Moto AI. will do it's stuff so you will not get what you take but what the AI decides it wants to show you.
I wonder if it will turn pigs ears into purses?
I doubt it has OFF option

Waking up this morning the choice was between a book on shipwrecks or this post on the finding of the remains of an 1857 ship being discovered.
Which one was the biggest temptation to read.
The screen was easier to read and I will never see it again.
My book can wait for another day, week or month

However I was more pleased with the 1905 annual of the cooperative wholesale society. A whole 10 pence less but full of the most wonderful engravings. Over 30 pages of all of their factories and depots

Over the weekend I fell off the wagon and visited a car boot sale where I spend far too much money shopping for things I don't need.
60p later I got myself a paleographic exercise.

Of course the brightest find was this carbon arc searchlight.
Unfortunately no history is known about this as it was just obtained to dress the ship on which it was mounted.
Zoom in on the background to see the cover built over HMS Victory with her front mast protruding out of the top

I was pleased to see this dynamo.
They don't make them like this anymore as this was the era when could were wound round wood bobbins.

I saw this candlestick holder on a gimbal in the Nelson gallery.
The gimbal keeps the candle upright as the ship rolls in heavy seas.
It looks like a spring loaded candle holder.
Spring loaded candle holders are generally attributed to the late nineteenth century but Nelson died earlier

2/2 Then I had to look up an original photograph taken in 1902 of a carbon arc lamp post taken in New York.
Not quite the same and I have to confess that I like the chunkier modern one more.
However nothing can beat the historic one even if the photo is the only evidence of it's existance

Naked lights and explosives are often a deadly combination and many ships have been lost when candles have been taken into the magazines.
Solved by having the light outside and a sealed glass window
