In 2269, the Akyazi-class Perimeter Action Vessel was approved for prototype construction. Its development was aligned with both the Loknar and Constitution refit projects in mind. This would allow the shipbuilders and Starfleet engineers to learn and adjust the new ship's development accordingly.

The starship USS McCook, NCC-1089, shown here in 2338 patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone. Laid down in 2291 and originally designated the USS Aulon, the ship underwent a renaming during its SLEP refit to honor a great Starfleet Engineer and designer of the Akyazi-Class, Commodore Augustus McCook.
