The crown is triangular with a red centre and pale outsides. Bottom right shows an insect with a long beak like mouth part. It is orange. Its head is brown and so is the neck but this changes later to red and then orange. Its wings are pale and folded over its back. It has red eyes and long antenna and a clawed hooked arm. It is bent over and looks concerned.

Drew another bug, oak bush-cricket (Meconema thalassinum). I haven't really drawn any anthropomorphic orthoptera yet so I thought I'd give it a go.

Went to the annual AES entomology fair today, it was awesome. I got myself a bunch of books, mainly identification keys and some other stuff. I highly recommend going at least once here.

A marble oak gall getting swarmed by chalcid wasps, possibly Torymus sp. Some of them are already attempting to lay eggs in the gall. :)

Bought some books from a local second-hand bookstore today.
Really happy with both of them, they're very useful for identifying native bees.

Male and female pair of Oedemera nobilis, the thick legged flower beetle.
Males are easily recognised by their enlarged thighs on their hind legs. Females lack this feature.

They're very common during warmer months over here and I usually find them on flowers.

One of my favourite species of fly we get here in the UK, the dark edged bee fly, Bombylius major. I see a lot of them around this time of year :)

Greater bee fly, Bombylius major, from last year. I can't wait for these guys to emerge in my area, they usually come out around this time of year :]

Anthaxia hungarica, a small species of jewel beetle. This one is a male that was collected in France in 2004 (according to the label).

I love the green colours on this specimen :)

A female hairy footed flower bee, Anthophora plumipes. One of the few digger bee species we have in the UK and personally one of my favourite bee species.

Male bees are a brownish-orange colour with long hairs on the middle pair of legs.

Bee flies! Greater bee fly (Bombylius major) and I believe the other one is Systoechus ctenopterus (?). Not 100 percent sure on that ID. I did see a lot of Greater bee flies this year though, like a lot.
