In early 2025, the Manassas City Council has approved a $3.1 million agreement to purchase the company’s old property (built in 1950).

The company was a valued part of the Manassas business community. His son (former Mayor and State Delegate Harry J. Parrish) and grandson (former Mayor Harry J. “Hal” Parrish II) each ran the company in turn.

The company started life as the Davis Brothers Ice & Fuel Company, but Bailey Davis was killed as a part of a tawdry love triangle by Karl Austin, an insurance agent in town. By 1923, Edgar Parrish had take over the company, and it took over the name known today.

After a short post war resurgence, the town again declined. The hotel closed and then burned; the mill closed in 1910. The Mansion was abandoned and dismantled. The church burned due to a lightening strike, and was rebuilt in 1922.

A sulphur spring off of Bull Run was believed to have medicinal value; the Sudley Springs Hotel was built to cater to those attracted to the waters. The two battles of Manassas were devastating to the community.

Sudley Mills were water powered grist and saw mills which may have started operations in the been in the 1760s, sometime around the time the mansion was constructed. In 1822, the Sudley Methodist Church was built on land donated by the Carters.

His grandson John Carter built his home, Sudley Mansion, north of Bull Run in Fairfax County around 1760. While a definitive answer on where the name Sudley came from, it became common through the area.

Gabriel intended to purchase a piece of silk for a flag on which they would have written 'death or liberty' - a clear reference to Patrick Henry's famous “give me Liberty or Give me Death” speech of 1775.

There is currently a new musical based on Gabriel’s rebellion playing at the Hanover Tavern (sadly, the tavern was also the location where five of Gabriel’s men were enslaved). The show brilliantly captures the urgency, bravery, and tragedy of the rebellion and the horrors of American slavery.

The rebellion was then betrayed by two enslaved men. Governor Monroe called out the militia, and Gabriel and more than 100 others were captured. Swift trials followed in September and October, resulting in Gabriel and 24 of his fellow rebels were executed.

Gabriel instructed his followers to not kill white Methodists, Quakers, and Frenchmen, as they were advocates for the abolition of slavery. On the planned day however, a torrential rainstorm washed out roads and bridges, foiling the attempt.

In the summer of 1800, Gabriel and his allies planned a rebellion which sought to seize Richmond by force, capture Governor James Monroe, and negotiate an end to slavery in Virginia.

\Gabriel was an enslaved blacksmith who worked in the Richmond area. He was literate, skilled, and inspired by the revolutionary ideals of liberty and justice that echoed through the new nation.

The hotels served as stopover points for excursion boats out of Washington DC; the boats served as floating casinos. After the boats began to no longer stop in the 1920s, the hotels closed, and the post office moved a half mile down the railroad tracks to the community of Cherry Hill.
