Britain's Neville Chamberlain allowed Germany's Hitler to annex Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland in 1938 -- without consulting Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain said the agreement would lead to "peace in our time." Trump thinks allowing Russia to annex eastern Ukraine will lead to a peace prize in his time.

William Kennedy, still exploring the American landscape and psyche at age 97. A role model for those of us who work with words (we, the few, the proud).

Why is it acceptable for the president to use taxpayer money to fly overseas and cut a ribbon at his own golf course?

Don’t normalize this abuse of office. It’s blatant corruption.

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

Zohran Mamdani is not the first NYC mayoral candidate whose citizenship has been questioned. W.R. Grace (founder of the firm) was an Irish-Catholic immigrant elected in 1880 despite slanderous attacks on his religion and his status as a citizen. (He was lawfully naturalized, like Mamdani.)

The great William Kennedy is in the middle of a new novel -- at age 97. I dropped by to say hello recently and was grilled about New York state politics in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Well, I sense a plot line there. Bill is the better-dressed man in this photo. As always.

CEO pay is up 1,085% since 1978, while typical worker pay is up just 24%.

Why do we always hear "we can't afford to pay our workers more" but never "we can't afford to pay our CEO more"?
