my beginner thoughts on how id make an uma musume-like, not having gone too specific in the setting because idk how to concretely write out my thoughts on that

"i post on bsky a lot about it, but whenever i play uma musume i just keep thinking about my idealized version of the game if it werent a gacha and instead purely single-player. its gotten to the point where ive just basically thought through a lot of it. itd need an entirely new setting and an analagous replacement to horsegirl runners but im still gonna describe it as if its 1:1 with umamusume for now due to ease of description:

youre a trainer who can select up to one of numerous (lets say, idk, 16) runners, and you go through their campaign to train them to have their goals met. you can play as both trainer and runner in these campaigns. as trainer, youd manage their training schedules, how they train, races, recovery, and help their studies. as runner, youd participate in training, races, social activities, and can choose whether or not to listen to your trainer for following training regimen or entering races. during training and races, i imagine you can control the runner (whod have stats and skills and specializations), and while thered be luck involved with how other runners do, youd directly have control over winning and losing based on your runner's capabilities.

you therefore need to strike a balance between what you as a trainer wants and what your runner wants to accomplish whats best for the runner, which depending on the character can mean a wide spectrum of things. while you can have a fail state and a best end, how you do can also end up influencing the final outcome into one of several endings. the bonds you form socially with other runners can also, in addition to influencing your skills/stats/other gameplay components, influence what end you get and/or how you get there.

there would obviously be more significant differences that end up affecting gameplay and character design due to the setting i imagine this to take place in, but this is p much the very basic start of what i have in mind"

fucked up that umamusume has a top-5 trixiecore horse but shes not in the anime and she wont be in global for another two years so all i have to go off of are her minor interactions
