![Andy Haldane is right to say, as the Green party has long been saying, that growth is the “new [false] god” of British and global politics. “Whose growth?” is entirely the right question, with the rider that we cannot have infinite growth on a finite planet.
But he is wrong to suggest that social mobility should be the alternative idol. Achieving this might mean more people than now escaping their family home, their community, their collapsing post-industrial city, but also that the majority are left behind, making vital contributions without which society would collapse, whether caring or cleaning, volunteering in a charity shop or delivering parcels, but not “socially mobile”.
We need not more “better” jobs, but for every job to be a good job, every community to have reliable modern infrastructure and social provision, everyone to get a decent standard of living and the respect they deserve. That means saying the apparently still to many unsayable “R” word: redistribution.
