While workers and toilers across Tonga grow sceptical of the king and demand change, the democrats sit on their hands. Yhis election, our message to Tongan workers and toilers is to vote for PTOA candidates, and fight for socialism.

On November 20th, Tonga will hold its 2025 General Election. The democratic ovement, organised primarily within the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands (DPFI/PTOA), is utterly incapable of winning the struggle for democracy.

Ba Mahuta Brig. Gen. Lamek Taplo, recently killed by Indonesian colonial forces alongside three others. The Ngalum Kupel commander was killed by a bomb dropped by a drone. Papua Merdeka!

The struggle for an independent West Papua continues.

Prof. Futa Helu: "The Tongan government is called a constitutional monarchy, but it is snowed over by cultural conventions, and it is the culture that is running the country now... I see the government expressing a feudal Tongan traditional conventional rule." (1997)

'Eseta Fusitu'a: "His [Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV] authority as King of Tonga far exceeds his authority in the constitution. Ninety percent of the King's authority is not in the constitution, it is in the culture." (1997)

'Akilisi Pohiva: "Tonga's stable government is not of its own making, but the result of an economy propped up with aid money and remittances." (1997)

Tonga's support for Israel is a black stain on the Pacific, and a sign of Dr. Eke's increasing desperation to cozy up to U.S. imperialists for paltry foreign aid. Tongan workers and toilers must support the Palestinians.

Today, the Human Rights and Democracy Movement is split between the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands, the People's Democratic Party, and the Tongan People's Party. We say: Tonga needs a socialist party!

The Human Rights and Democracy movement has a 50 year history in Tonga, from an informal grouping in the 70s to an electoral movement in the 90s, and forming government in the 2010s.

AU/NZ imperialist forces were rapidly dispatched to support the royalist government. Here we see #NZ soldiers manning barricades on roads and guarding the Fua'amotu international airport. The prime concern from imperialists was the safety of tourists, capitalists and aristocrats.

People often overlook the #pacificislands and class struggle that takes place there. But in 2006, Tongan workers and toilers took to the streets demanding the democratic reforms that politicians had agitated for over decades prior. This culminated in a long, destructive riot.
