Helping little kids say big sentences. I study kids with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), trained as an SLP, using Implementation Science frameworks, reading deeply about Climate Change and Disaster Research. All posts my own.
With help from @leighmcleanphd.bsky.social (Professor Cookie!) our lab spent today getting ready for #DLDday

The snow today puts me in mind of one of the funnest and hardest studies my lab in Iowa did (during a winter when windchill kept closing schools!). This line of work on 'using a hook' to get people to use specific sentence types kicked off a line of work on embedding syntax in different contexts.

Even though recast therapy is great for treating grammar in #DevLangDis, our lab takes a 'kitchen sink' approach when the focus is on something other than the intervention itself. There is growing evidence for explicit approaches. #SLPeeps Do you mix and match? How do you decide which to use when?

First, Meta-analysis of #recasting from 2015 pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... (The infographic includes newer work, but also dated). Recasting works for grammar targets and kids with #devlangdis ... but wow, it requires intentionality & a high dose. Makes it hard to incorporate into regular tx.
