Young Americans who aspire to be scientists should be looking for career paths outside their home country, just as aspiring scientists do in other countries that don’t adequately support science. If I were starting my career now, that’s what I’d be doing.
My teen, who had dreamt of being an astrophysicist, just told me he wants to go to law school because, “Science isn’t going to be a priority in the US in the future…I don’t want a job where I’ll be constantly worried my funding will be taken away.”

Gutting. How many future scientists have we lost?

"And here's something I know you'll enjoy hearing," he assured the Humbug.

The bug listened with rapt attention to something he alone could hear—the shouts and applause of an enormous crowd, all cheering for him.

Zach Weinersmith @zachweinersmith.bsky.social is a national treasure.
TIL about Tolkien's best named character: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Teleporno

Extra funny because even if you imagine he was innocent of pornography, he surely knew the Greek roots would indicate something like far-prostitute.
Teleporno
Teleporno is a Telerin name meaning "Silver-tall".

Pretty much sums up the moment.
Current US Policy:

If you’re suspected of trafficking a small amount of drugs with no evidence, we will murder you, but if you’re convicted of trafficking an enormous amount of drugs with copious evidence, we will pardon you. Because we are currently a very stupid country.

The original "Planet of the Apes" is a Christmas movie. In the first ten minutes alone it has like 2,000 Christmases.

Mark Kelly for president
Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.

Someone who says "Holy shit" about punctuation is my kind of person.
Holy shit. Here is Tolkien using question mark, then em dash, then lowercase. This is officially allowed.

People will die, and are currently dying, because RFK was granted one of the most powerful megaphones in the country. Two people who could have thrown barriers in front of his climb decided not to; there's a sex scandal here but it is not the biggest scandal.

I don't think he's lying when he says things like this. Lying implies intent to say something false, and I think that he is completely uninterested in whether what he's saying is true or false. He just says what makes him feel better and/or what his audience wants to hear.
At this point, I wonder if he isn't lying when he says he has "my highest Poll Numbers, ever" since it's entirely possible that's what his aides are telling him. It's quite likely that there's an entire Potemkin village built around Trump right now.

If a swastika isn't a hate symbol, what is?
Exclusive: The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika, nooses and the Confederate flag as hate symbols.

The military service drafted a new policy that classifies them as “potentially divisive.”

Ten years ago, I would never have imagined it possible that a US president could call for the execution of his political opponents, and that this call would barely be considered worth covering in the press.

I don't think of myself as an exceptionally cynical person, but I'm baffled that anyone could find this claim (that the DOJ will scrub the Epstein files to remove mentions of Republicans before releasing them) to be "stunning". It would never have occurred to me to imagine that they wouldn't.

Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

Here is Summers literally saying that his "best shot" at sleeping with a younger colleague is to leverage his status as an influential figure in the field. These people know exactly what they are doing.
