AI systems are often used to determine public benefits—but they have been proven to cut off eligible people, deny needed services, and falsely accuse people of fraud. These injustices can’t be made better by having a human simply review and approve the AI: keeping a “human in the loop” isn’t enough.

Hearing a lot about AI and data center expansion? That it's happening quickly, behind closed doors, putting huge demands on strained energy grids, leading to rising utility costs, reversing climate progress, and draining water from communities?

AI is central to the conservative agenda to destroy government capacity and public benefit programs, but its role is hidden. Here, we’ve got destructive policy being justified by the deluded notion that AI and related technology will make it less inaccurate and harmful.
This past Sunday, my colleague Trevor + I published this OpEd in the NYTimes about imminent cuts to Medicaid. Up to 14 million people will lose insurance bc of penalties that punish working ppl, parents, + disabled ppl for not jumping through more hoops made of red tape. AI will make the cuts worse.

AI is the most destructive way for conservatives to cut Medicaid + other benefit programs. Now, it’ll play a role in the effort to impose requirements on Medicaid recipients to report work or lose insurance. We cover that within a bigger-picture look at these termination traps in this NYT OpEd.
In this NYT OpEd, we recount first-hand the devastation that Medicaid work requirements—cuts by another name—caused when Arkansas tried them. We were legal aid attorneys helping as many people as possible keep insurance. Nobody serious about governing should invite these problems to their states /1
