Even if you eventually intend to ask them to do both, the EFF guide can be a little less scary when you're coming across things you've already done sometimes (or it can be frustrating, depending on the person...you know your loved ones, choose individually).

Love the EFF list mentioned above, and there's also securityplanner.consumerreports.org which can be more approachable to start with for basics if you're worried about your loved one getting more scared during the process. A little lighter on risks details, and covers a subset of the same concerns.
