I'm glad to see this is finally moving forward, even if I wish it could have already happened years ago. I took advantage of the consultation to contribute a personal mini-rant. Also hi Bluesky 👋! Nice to see so many wise and funny voices here from Twitter's yesteryear
My contribution to the public consultation on the redesign of College Green, Dublin: First, close the square to private motor and bus traffic. This could be done today and I wish you would consider doing that before you get every single detail of the square right. Brussels closed Boulevard Anspach to motor traffic and only rebuilt the space after some years, giving citizens the chance to appreciate the opportunities without cars and to discover its potential use. Once the redesign starts, focus on less: less clutter, fewer intrusive signs, fewer single-purpose things. Think about citizens and their needs: space, quiet, toilets, benches, ease of access from one point to another. Get rid of the ugly London Plane trees and think about plants that enhance the space rather than compensate for its failings. And finally, although it's probably out of scope, consider a public discourse about an appropriate use for the old Parliament building. Bank of Ireland should donate it to the state for public use, or it should be purchased compulsorily from them. Opening up a discussion about its potential use--as a public convening space, an exhibition centre, a library, a theatre, a leaning centre...--could ignite the public imagination and create political pressure on its owners to consider a more appropriate use than its current incarnation, since 1801, as a physical impediment to the dream of Irish independence.
