Today marks 50 years since the sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald on its voyage through Lake Superior. As we mourn the loss of those 29 sailors, let us be humbled by the forces of nature on the Great Lakes. The wave heights and winds were extreme that day.

This past Friday, TCMETSOC members attended the annual 3M Wizards Teachers Workshop. It was great to see so many K-12 STEM teachers excited about what they do and share some things about our organization. With some exciting displays, we also illustrated how teachers can incorporate meteorology!

Tomorrow at 3pm at the Cargill Building on the U of MN's St. Paul Campus is the 32nd annual Kuehnast Lecture featuring a presentation on using AI in Earth Systems forecasting and prediction. Its sure to be of interest to meteorologists both amateur and seasoned. RSVP at the web address below!

While the federal government is hiring back some of its NWS Meteorology Staff, funding has been pulled for a new Phased Array Radar that could revolutionize hurricane forecasting and was slated to be deployed on hurricane hunting aircraft. Read more here: www.science.org/content/arti...

Be heat aware this weekend! Heat is already gripping the Northern and Northeastern parts of the state. Find shade, drink plenty of water and limit strenuous activities in the heat and a friendly reminder to try and water plants and trees before or after the heat of the day!

Interesting weather phenomenon in MN early this morning. Have you heard of a heat burst? One likely occured in several locales near Fertile, MN around 4am this morning after passage of a thunderstorm that coincided with a 30 MPH wind gust and a high temperature "island" of 93 degrees! Source: NDAWN

As several wildfires burn across the state, heed the Red Flag Warnings and open burning restrictions as warm temperatures coupled with low humidities and gusty winds raise the fire danger significantly. Rain may not arrive until Thursday.
