We'll use students' GPA & ACT scores to admit them to a group of public (& private!) universities, comm colleges, and tech institutes while also informing them of their state grant aid (like TN Promise & HOPE), as well as institutional merit aid! All personalized.
July 23, 2025 at 10:30 PM
This fall, over 60k students will participate in our pilot testing this innovation. Groups of students will receive (1) direct admissions, (2) direct admissions plus aid, or (3) direct admissions, aid, & additional supports [including targeted outreach and 1-1 advising].
July 23, 2025 at 10:30 PM
So, why not do both? Simplify access to college through direct admissions AND use that same data to pre-award aid. Students receive a clear, early, & personalized message: "There's a place for you in college—and there are resources to help you afford it!"
July 23, 2025 at 10:30 PM
🚨 We're excited to launch TN Direct Admissions, the nation's first program to simplify college admissions + financial aid! Our pilot will provide students upfront college admissions offers alongside personalized commitments of financial aid—no applications, no fees, no BS.

Though there is variation in matching across colleges, unequal match rates are driven by the fact that, while nearly 60% of students here are Black or Hispanic, only 26% of instructors are—contrasted with the fact that only 1/3 of students are white but 63% of instructors are.
January 27, 2025 at 6:34 PM
And when Black and Hispanic students do experience matching, they mostly do so with "instructors" or "adjuncts" and those less likely to hold a graduate degree—which matters if the benefits of matching mechanistically flow from repeated engagement and/or instructors' capital.
January 27, 2025 at 6:34 PM
However, there are *wide* gaps in same-race matching. Among 2.2M student-instructor pairs, 42% are a match, but that ranges from 77% among white students to only 29% among Hispanic and 14% among Black students. Match rates are even lower in important first-year courses.
January 27, 2025 at 6:34 PM
Same-race matching descriptively increases course pass rates, grades, and credit hour accumulation across subjects in students' first year—particularly among Black and Hispanic students.
January 27, 2025 at 6:34 PM
🚨 Our paper on same-race matching in college is now online at Economics of Education Review! We talk a lot about the benefits of same-race matching in K-12 and higher ed but haven't stopped to ask: Who even has access to same-race matching/how often (and where) does it occur?

🥰 Being a good instructor (and esp stats instructor) means building competence and confidence—and often breaking down barriers and erasing prior math/stats trauma.
