Get back to me when you've got people going "Omg I love dodgeball too!" when you've said "Dog's are pretty good :)".

Ideas like this only seem good in the first ten seconds, apply any further thought and they fall apart, sadly. Social medias "You cant read" is unique, not actual illiteracy.

God its so easy to demonstrate that this isnt the major issue with adults on social media. Have you ever had someone completely misunderstand or misrepresent what you've said in a positive way? No, its always someone freaking out and raging mad. But illiteracy is not an issue of aggression or anger.

but the tl;dr is that people online arent dumping wholly formed accusations about who and what you are as a person because they've been taught to cue words and meanings wrongly. Illiterate people cannot write an invented diatribe about you. Unethical people can and will just ignore what words mean.

Social media enables and enforces very strong in group and out group behaviour that protects people when they decide to try and tear strangers apart. Very little will come down to illiteracy - a lot is about being fully protected from social consequences of being utterly vile for no good reason.

You can tell the difference easily when you get to the point where you are saying "It doesnt say that or mean that - to clarify the core idea is this" and someone continues to scream at you. They are not going "But I expected the word butterfly so that's what you said". These are separate issues.

And the people responding to you in text, with ideas and sentences you can fully comprehend? You dont get it one way - you dont get people who cant read in the way that work is addressing, but can express themselves accurately in text. People do not struggle to read but write easily.

There is no mistaking what I say or anywhere to find me expressing any of those ideas about LLMs. I very openly despise them. People do not invent ideas and put them in my mouth because they couldn't read posts good - they do it because its normal to project all your problems on strangers online.
November 12, 2025 at 9:55 AM
A common one I get is when I point out that everyone's current favourite "LLMs give you brain damage" study is a crock of shit that would get you laughed out of a respectable journal.

The amount of people who have quoted me as saying LLMs are great and powerful and good is hilarious.

This is also why people who absolute melt downs when faced with the very simple question "Where does it say that?"

They already know nothing says it - but youre breaking the rules of online engagement where people with enough yes men get to scream whatever they like at strangers.

There is not a single instance I can think back on, online, where someone's failure to read as a fundamental skill could be the issue. It is entirely down to a culture where grinding your axe against the face of any person you see, and twisting anything into a moral superiority battle, is the norm.

I think the last person to freak out at me was the one who started yelling about how bisexual women are responsible for biphobia because we knowingly bring straight men into spaces where they assault people.

Because I'd said there are people who still really dont believe bisexuals are real.
November 12, 2025 at 9:51 AM
Reading failure is a huge problem but the people yelling at you online are wholesale inventing personalities and beliefs that are impossible to have ever crammed into the single post they scream at your about.

These are separate issues.

Feels no different than when someone sits around trying not to cry that someone who's never made an effort still wont text them back.

Happens on every scale in every type of relationship - personal to professional - grow some self respect!

Please learn to spit in people's faces instead of continuing to bed for scraps they were barely giving you in the first place.
