Delighted to see @franmonks.bsky.social's excellent portrait, commissioned by Christ Church Oxford's law library, with Oxford law students yesterday. I was worried when she told me the subject doesn't have a veto. I needn't have.

As a proud user of the em-dash (see excerpt from my 2015 monograph below), annoyed to hear my student's use of it challenged as proof of illegitimate AI reliance.

LLMs reflect global—not just Anglo-American—English usage. Your gotcha moment may simply reflect your own parochialism.

Proportional Representation has frequently handed balance of power to extremists in recent years.

FPTP can hand all power to extremists.

Ranked-Choice Vote punishes extremists, by forcing parties to vie for 2nd preference votes from voters of other parties.

Anti-solidaristic far-right parties deny that the interests of *all* the people count equally. They do well under PR, but would be hurt by ranked choice voting, which rewards parties that are not just loved by its own voters but also tolerated by voters of other parties. Time for Europe to switch?

The Constitution Reform Commission of Bangladesh has *just* proposed a Sri Lanka & Nepal style multipartisan Constitutional Council to make appointments to a host of guarantor institutions. Another reason to join us.

#LawPhDTips: Comprehensively reviewing relevant literature is essential, but writing a 'literature review' section is not. Existing scholarship is better 'used' throughout--in framing research ?s, identifying gaps, critiquing, extending, modifying, distinguishing, adding to.

Today's reading suggestion: Jeremy Waldron on the principle of loyal opposition:

"as far as possible opposition parties are always to be regarded as loyal, no matter what policies or constitutional changes they favor."

I know the terms are often confused, hence the attempt at a taxonomy. Imp to look at substance of policies, not the label therefore. The meaning of assimilation in theoretical literature is more stable (& consistently negative) though.

A revised taxonomy below, with a new category of 'domination':

Does this taxonomy of various 'approaches' to ethnocultural minorities in deeply divided societies make sense? Suggestions/amendments in comments please.

When the Supreme Court quotes you without citation, should you feel proud that your work has passed into received wisdom?
