I don't *speak* it super well either, I'm just fluent in writing.
(In my defence, English is my third language, after French.)
Plus I think many people in East Germany had Russian rather than English in school and that was not that long ago.

We definitely have the "country's big enough, don't need another language" effect in play to an extent.
It also really depends on location. People who live rurally usually don't encounter English much at all, so there's less reason to not get rusty.

Personally, I certainly don't want another smartwatch where most of it is locked down.
