7. Educate others There is no such thing as a passive ally. Correct people when they misgender trans folks; engage in conversations when people exhibit bigoted behavior, and stand up for trans folks, even when they're not around. Call in > Call out Value conversation over confrontation. Try to add perspective instead of trying to change it. Small actions are still valuable. You don't have to speak in front of thousands or have a large social media platform to be a good ally. Smaller actions like gendering or naming someone correctly or having conversations with resistant family members can also be immensely powerful. Don't forget: Everyone has a gender. Which means everyone is or has been limited by gender. Trans liberation is collective liberation. Join us.

3. Put your pronouns in your bio Sharing pronouns helps to dismantle the idea that how we look does NOT always equal who we are. Sharing pronouns also creates a safe space for trans and gender nonconforming folks to share our pronouns and be gendered correctly, too. For more help with pronouns, visit pinkmantaray.com/pronouns. Follow trans creators (Photos of various trans creators.) 5. Educate Yourself Recognize it is not on trans folks to educate you on everything transgender. That is your responsibility. Some will ask in exasperation: "You're telling me to learn from trans people but then telling me I can't ask trans people questions, what?" Yes: Ask trans people who have consented to being asked! Many trans people provide this type of education as their job (Schuyler included.) Engage with these educators and be sure to compensate them accordingly. Don't expect your trans friend to be your trans dictionary. Use resources like this instead.

Today intends to celebrate and empower the transgender and nonbinary community, bringing visibility to our experiences. But visibility without protection is dangerous at best and fatal at worst. With hundreds of anti-trans bills criminalizing our presence in every public sphere, with public figures and politicians openly calling for our eradication, and with anti-trans violence at an all-time high, we need protection. We need our allies now. SWIPE FOR A FEW THINGS TO DO! pinkmantaray.com/TDOV 1. Learn proper language No: He is a transgender. No: He is transgendered. Yes: He is transgender. Yes: He is a transgender man. "Transgender" is an adjective. Using it as a noun or verb is not only grammatically incorrect but also dehumanizing or implies something has happened to make us trans which is false. No: He transgendered last year. No: He changed genders. Yes: He transitioned last year. Yes: He transitioned. Yes: He affirmed his gender. I didn't change my gender. I changed my presentation. I've always been myself - a boy, a man, I just haven't always had the words or resources or confidence to explain that. No: He was born a girl. No: When he was a girl. No: Before he became a boy. Yes: He was assigned female at birth. Yes: When he presented as a woman OR When he was perceived as a woman. Yes: Before he transitioned. These imply I was once a girl. But I never was truly a girl. Though I may have "looked like" or presented as a girl, I have always been me: a boy, a man. Even when I couldn't explain that. For me, this extends to "FTM" as well. When relevant, I prefer to say I was "assigned female at birth, and am male" instead. No: Being trans means you're gay. Yes: Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same. No: Did you get the surgery? Yes: Don't ask about surgeries and/or private parts unless a person explicitly invites that conversation! 2. Take action for trans folks now! Every year since 2020 has seen record-breaking numbers of anti-trans legislation in the US. 507 bills proposed in 2023, and already 479 bills this year in 2024. The large majority of the bills attack trans children. Your actions can make a difference. Please visit the ACLU's bill tracker to learn about bills introduced or passed in your state. Email or call representatives to urge them to oppose the bills. You should also call your state Senators NOW and demand that they pass the Equality Act.
