I was sorry to read of John Walker's passing last year. He did us all a great service, founding Autodesk, writing tons of FOSS tools, publishing fascinating articles on his website Fourmilab, etc. An OG programmer. It's still largely his code.

The final line I found remarkable. Its verb, bāz-na-dānad ("could not distinguish"), is both inverted and split between the first word of the first hemistich and the last word of the second. Firdawsī was a good poet!

I’ve just been feeling bad since it happened. The mother was a friend. She passed suddenly the day before Halloween. We were all set to take our kids trick-or-treating together. (In fact, we still did, but in a state of shock, without her.)

Is خنفروش from Persian? I think I’ve eaten that in Oman/UAE without knowing what it’s called. “Furūsh” would mean something to do with selling in Persian.

The financial impact on universities will be even worse than that enrollment figure might suggest, given how much more foreign students pay on average.

Looks like something went horribly wrong over at Twitter/X with the YubiKey re-enrollment process.
Like many others, I'm locked out of my account. Maybe this is how I finally permanently stop using it? A blessing in disguise?
