During the past year, there have been several attacks against critical infrastructure near Finland. Russians are being increasingly apparent in their will to escalate the situation in the Baltic Sea.

These events must be set in the right context to understand why they happen. 1/

Tree moss, Pseudevernia furfuracea, is one of the most common lichens in Finland as it grows also on pine trees that are everywhere here. Apothecia on tree moss are very rare sight, this old tree moss from Ähtäri had stunning apothecia with a beautiful color

New - to me - perspective on Ocean Cleanup project, ie even if ignore the costs, it could actually cause more harm to ocean evosystem than help.
"CLEANING" THE OCEAN USING NETS IS A DANGEROUS IDEA.

The Ocean Cleanup is using boats & a net to collect ocean plastic (left). I've circles all the animals trapped in their early prototypes (right).

There are better ways to solve the ocean plastic problem... 🧵

The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied!

Blue-Footed Boobies and the magic poo ring.

Blue-footed Boobies nest in a simple scrape on the ground. Guides told us that the Booby, while shading their eggs from the harsh sun, turn to face the sun throughout the day, and that's why there is a ring of poo around the nest. 🧵

A Swedish minesweeper went there 6.5h ago and the spot matches Yi Peng 3 track and C-Lion 1 path.

Two internet cables in Baltic Sea were likely sabotaged on Sunday-Monday time frame. @pekka.bsky.social has given pretty solid evidence that the culprit could be a Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3
And that other short red part of the track later in the track? It did this there.

Could fit with some operations done, say, with an anchor after the events?

Slender-billed curlew has become extinct. The last one was observed in 1995. @petteritolvanen.bsky.social mentions that he knows several people who had seen the species in the last century. And now it is not possible any more

Ramalina fraxinea (Cartilage lichen in English and Isorustojäkälä in Finnish) is common in south Finland (also in my neighbourhood forests in Mustikkamaa), but becomes pretty rare further north you go. It is sensitive to airpollution.

This one had striking apothecia (fruiting bodies).

This is not a drill, a mummified sabretooth cat has been published from the #Pleistocene permafrost of Russia. It's a Homotherium cub! The team (Lopatin et al.) reckon it's Homotherium latidens. It's too young to have enlarged upper canines. Paper is OA ... www.nature.com/articles/s41... cont...

Wolf’s milk (Lycogala epidendrum) got split to 15 new species a couple of years ago.

I recently spotted these. I havent learned to ID the new species yet, but these had a few characteristics that could allow to narrow the species: spotty surface, seems to grow also in groups, spores purple/pinkish
