It means accepting that we might get it wrong, that we might be told we aren’t listening even when we think we are.

That process is messy. It’s humbling. But it’s also necessary.

Truly hearing lived experience means stepping into a space of discomfort and uncertainty. It means acknowledging that our usual ways of working might not fit everyone—and being open to change when they don’t.

It can be easy—comfortable even—to stay within the certainty of our professional frameworks, following methodical steps, evidence-based protocols, and what feels "safe" in our roles. But when we do this without genuinely listening, we risk causing harm.
