girl-esque creature

(though i get why later versions interpreted the atmosphere more threateningly because i think my "the crystal tower turns the game into a dungeon crawler and eureka is actually the town" read is not exactly common)

leaving the crystal tower is a whole thing that doesn't feel worth it because you have everything you'll ever need in there. except important parts of what you might need are at the bottom of the optional super dungeon. so you go there and back so much it starts to feel familiar and homely

eureka is my favorite part of ff3. it feels like a safe haven in the crystal tower. i spent so long in that tower it felt like nothing outside of it existed anymore so eureka having healing and shops at the bottom made it feel like the most welcoming place i could get to despite how dangerous it is

they always make it so dramatic but that song is more of an "oh? what's this?" kind of feeling to me

legacy is more palatable but legacy feels like bypassing everything the game is trying to do so i could never play it

that's like the only game i've ever played that feels that oppressive and suffocating purely from difficulty. and i've beat it on pointdevice twice
November 11, 2025 at 10:01 AM
i thought it might be that but honestly i think there's more to it. a lot of ran's spells really messed me up and scared me even on my winning attempt but most of yukari's don't at all. they have more bullets but tend to tone down the parts that really freaked me out in ran's versions

okay danmaku barrier seems really mean but that's kind of it

she's kind of a sidegrade where most of her spells are harder in some way but very toned down in another, and somehow every single time they tone down the part that messed me up originally
November 11, 2025 at 7:58 AM
i haven't beat yukari yet but i've got down to like her last two spells and i think she only has one that's meaningfully harder than ran's equivalent, and several that are easier
November 11, 2025 at 7:56 AM
also i captured her final spell first try. somehow very straightforward compared to most of that fight
