These findings are particularly interesting because the cholinergic system is a new treatment target for cognitive and clinical symptoms in schizophrenia. 🌟

We found consistent alterations across multiple components of the cholinergic system, most notably reductions in muscarinic (M1/M4) and nicotinic receptor levels. Meta-analyses showed moderate to large effects in the striatum, hippocampus, and frontal cortex.
