I always seem to have avian companions during large creative projects. Currently, an elderly hen is getting me through writing a book. Once it was a discarded racing pigeon. And I’m often visited by a family of crows (in a different location).

A family of large-billed crows have trained me to offer them peanuts every day. This one (mama-crow, I think) is the most trusting. After taking a peanut from my hand she cracks it open right next to me.

There is a geta shop in my town. You can pick the wood base and the fabric strap you like, and the shopkeeper puts them together for you.

Sake, mirin, soy sauce, miso: these are flavors that define Japanese cooking, and they all used to be made in kioke, wooden barrels that can last over a century. Kioke help cultivate a unique microbiome in each brewery that defines that brewery’s flavor. #fermentation

The other one doesn’t snuggle, but likes to be part of things.

I’ve had pet chickens since I was a child (including a rooster who let me paint his toenails) but I always thought they tolerated my affection. This hen insists on it, tugging at my pants until I pick her up, and melting in my lap.
