Celebrating the music that moves me. Hurling thoughts into the void.
Spoken word you say….

I’m somewhere on the “can tell” to “don’t cry” spectrum.

It’s a legitimately great third act, and that goes a long way redeeming the slog that it took to get there in a lot of folks recollection

Sounds like what they really need is a facial scanner that identifies who can identify the difference between correlation and causation.

It sounds a lot like Out in the Storm era Waxahatchee to me, which is pretty much my ideal outcome.

A bunch of people recommend 3D Country to me and I tried to get into but it just never clicked. I gave Getting Killed a cursory chance and instantly became obsessed with it. Dunno if it’s the album or the timing, but one of my favorites this year

Mostly my experience with U or M fans.

I think U of M just likes throwing crap at people. We got pelted with D Cell batteries for god knows what reason at a game, and I don’t think anyone would describe Northwestern as a rival.

Barbarian was a lot of fun.

I think there’s a reasonable criticism to be made of No Kings in that it’s a protest supporting something that is already popular. I didn’t take Stancil’s post to conflate being bigger with being a bigger deal, but maybe that’s how it was taken?
October 16, 2025 at 6:40 PM
I definitely agree that simple comparisons are difficult. But the broader turnout for No Kings (as opposed to the more targeted Civil Rights protests) certainly seems due to the fact that one is protesting the government’s impingement on the statues quo, and the other was protesting the status quo.

Bigger isn’t an incoherent metric, it’s just a measure of how much support the cause has in the broader culture.
October 16, 2025 at 6:09 PM
No Kings is a broadly popular cause, the Civil Rights Movement was not, of course the popular one is larger. Why is this a remotely controversial statement? I don’t understand the furor on this.

I assumed it was SCOTUS

I had a similar experience with Make Yourself. It was heightened by the fact that for many of my friends that was *the* Incubus album. Same with Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World. There’s something vaguely destabilizing about a band achieving greater success while leaving you behind.

I’ve seen Deftones a half dozen times, and QOTSA only once, so it’s QOTSA for me. But I’d tell everyone else to go see the Deftones. Not only are they great, but they’ve somehow developed a much younger fanbase, and the energy at the show would be way higher.

I dunno, I’d say Crack the Skye is a product of its time, but Leviathan holds up.
October 9, 2025 at 2:31 PM
Why does it label the Biden years Trump and vice versa? This seem deliberately misleading

These guys absolutely could have opened for the Walkmen. But we’re turning the corner on bands sounding like the late 90s. It was inevitable the early 00s revival was next.

No, but I’d put my hand up to the window and make it jump from obstacle to obstacle.

I was explaining why I thought Tom’s comment has a point, not accusing you of doomerism. If you’re fighting the fight via democracy, I don’t think you’re the intended target of most of what he’s saying.
September 27, 2025 at 2:15 PM
I don’t think this is explicitly directed at you then, unless I’m missing some context.
September 27, 2025 at 2:13 AM
To the extent it reminds people that need to hear it that there is still real, democratic work that needs to be done, I think it is helpful. There is a lot of doomerism mixed in with the fears over where we’re headed.
