Yesterday, Amsterdam was on strike. With 5000 students and colleagues we were on Dam square to protest 1,1 billion higher education budget cuts. We call on the Senate to stop these disastrous measures. #WOinActie

We are honored to host the presentation of this important book. At the event, we will connect the content of the book to our new exhibition 'Shadows on the Atlantic'.

After the presentations, you of course have a chance to visit the exhibition yourself! www.hetscheepvaartmuseum.nl/doen/agenda/...

Excellent start of the year with my very own copy of 'Humans: a Monstrous History', the 2025 read I've been looking forward to most!

I'm so honored to already have been given the book by author
@drsurekhadavies.bsky.social herself. Pre-order yours to get it in February! #skystorians #histsci

The Dutch budget cuts to education will be disastrous. Unions are gauging how ready we are to strike. It's with pain in my heart, I haven't even given classes yet since I started at the UvA in August..

But yes, I'm ready to strike, and I expect a lot of colleagues with me. #DoeHetNiet #WOinActie

Four stars today for the exhibition 'Shadows on the Atlantic' (which I co-curated) in Dutch national newspaper NRC!

The exhibition on our colonial maritime past is in Het Scheepvaartmuseum, the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam in the coming years - do let me know if you are around for a look.

I'm currently conducing research on women in the maritime world, with the fantastic painting collection of the museum.

And in August, I started out as Assistant Professor in Public History of Slavery at the University of Amsterdam (my alma mater). Very happy to combine my curatorship with teaching!

In the past years I've curated an exhibition on slavery in Dutch East India Company Asia for the Tong Tong Fair 2023, and co-curated the exhibition 'Shadows on the Atlantic' on colonial maritime history that has recently opened at Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam.

How great to see so many of you already here!

A brief introduction: I started out as an early modernist in colonial Atlantic history, have since developed into a public historian. I wrote a book on the Asian and Eurasian women in my own family history in the Indonesian Archipelago: De Voormoeders.
