HMS Belfast, plucky hero of the Battle of the North Cape where she played a key role in the sinking of the Scharnhorst, fired a VE Day salute in London at 3pm this afternoon.

Reading The Towers of Trebizond, by Rose Macaulay, published 1956. Aunt Dot and the Reverend Chantry-Pigg have just been to Russia and offered their views on democracy. In case of any doubt it's a satire.

It's almost time for making marmalade. @garlicandpearls.bsky.social have done some exploration around the theme for you this week. What lies behind this shortcut symbol for Britishness?

Is it a cake? Is it a pie? Only @murielzagha.bsky.social has the answer. The Christmas Corkers are over but we're still celebrating Christmas with this most ancient of French traditions.

Eau de Cologne du Coq by Guerlain. I found this bottle on the Danish island of Fanø and asked @murielzagha.bsky.social to tell me its story. I couldn't have imagined quite such an exotic tale. To find out more listen to this week's episode of @garlicandpearls.bsky.social

It's St Lucy's Day and where better to be than the early morning service in Oslo, which was utterly beautiful. And saffron buns for breakfast.

I have listened to The World's Biggest Paving Slab by English Teacher more than any other song this year. Because it's fantastic and it's about Yorkshire.

For more about giant slabs stone try this week's episode of @garlicandpearls.bsky.social @murielzagha.bsky.social

I used to come to the Brandenburg Gate in the early 1980s, when the wall ran in front of it and we had to climb the watchtowers to peer into the East. It always sends a shiver down my spine to be able just to walk through it. It's important not to forget there was a time when we couldn't.

Is it grim up north or do we like it like that? In this episode of @garlicandpearls.bsky.social I compose "a short poem" for @murielzagha.bsky.social dedicated to the spirits of the moors and slabs of rock.
