I know! The design was made in 1881, the same year that Morris gave him lecture on 'Art & the Beauty of the Earth' in Stoke -

campaigning for better education, housing, access to green spaces.

And his fears that we will become martyrs to the machine. Worth reading:

This is the exhibition, and I'll be there 3/4th Dec for various tours & talks. And more things in the New Year too. Lots of embroidery and botanical drawings and beautiful books xx

I just love the poster for our exhibition opening next month at The Arc, Winchester.
One of William Morris’s most complex textile designs, 'Windrush' required 17 printing blocks.
To see this, & many other Arts and Crafts treasures, tickets available here : www.arcwinchester.org.uk/event/beauty...

Thinking of Morris and his challenge to us in his lecture on 'Art & the Beauty of the Earth', delivered #otd 1881.

He declared 'I believe machines can do everything-except make works of art'.

On the trail of #JaneAusten this week with ACE Cultural Tours.

We've been to her birthplace in Steventon & her gravestone in Winchester. Yesterday was #Bath, today Lyme Regis (& 'Persuasion'). And tomorrow, her last home & @chawtonhouse.bsky.social .

I do love my work!

Last day in Bern & the sky has cleared. The high Alps finally seen - just.
Visit to @zentrumpaulklee.bsky.social before we turn for home.

As Klee says, 'Art does not reproduce the visible. Rather, it makes visible.'

Which is apt. We knew the peaks were there. But couldn't see them until today.

Can anyone show me a scarier #mermaid?
Bocklin's 'Still Water' - once seen, never forgotten. Is it her heavy eyeliner? Her terrifying friend in the sea beneath?

She's one of the stunning pictures on show @kunstmuseumbern.bsky.social - our first gallery on this #Swiss tour.

Grateful for a peaceful afternoon here in St Mary's, Nun Monkton.

After my talk about the stained glass & history of the church, the group went next door to see the gardens & statues at the Priory.

And I had a few minutes to reflect on the beauty & storytelling in Morris & Burne-Jones's designs.

Reading William Morris & his 'Aims for Art' (1886).
I can't believe we are still fighting these battles.
He encourages us to stand firm: 'we must be resolute to endure no tyranny, accept no lie, quail before no fear, although they may come before us disguised as piety, duty or affection'

Excited to share this #podcast episode on #ArtsandCrafts, esp. women's creativity.

Hugely enjoyed my conversation with Yukiko about our recent collection of essays, inc. Jane Morris & Karin Larsson.
Podcast starts in #Swedish- but don't worry, we chat in English.

The star of our visit to @charlestontrust.bsky.social -for me- was this substantial portrait of Vanessa Bell at work in the garden room. Painted by Duncan Grant & now hanging in his studio. I love her thoughtfulness, & the view over her shoulder.
And, of course, the mix of books & cuttings & pots.

Spotted this weekend, snuggled happily between Hockney, Leach & Ricardo - my big book on Jane and William Morris.
In the window of Janette Ray's bookshop, #York.

Celebrating women's art in Stavanger today at the exhibition of Frida Hansen's weavings & Kitty Kielland's landscape painting.

Hansen combined Arts & Crafts approaches with Art Nouveau motifs.

I love her evocation of Swan Maidens & Mermaids &folk tales.

Both worked for women's equality too.

Lots to think about after our visit to Bournemouth for the 'May Morris' exhibition at Russell-Cotes Museum.

We're looking forward to building on themes of beauty & radical imagination at our show in the Arc, Winchester -with embroidery, watercolour designs, Kelmscott Press books. Opens 15 Nov 2025

Hoping you feel less achy and feverish soon. Sending gentle sunlight and irises from the garden at Kelmscott Manor (our half term treat last week).

Very pleased to be leading a group to Switzerland again this year:
staying in Bern, and visiting outstanding art collections in Basel and Luzern.
Plus scenic trains along the lakes and up into the mountains - hopefully we will see Grindelwald.

Following in the footsteps of William Morris today- I visited the ancient stone circles & avenue of #Avebury. This sacred landscape was a favourite place for young William.
He walked 6 miles cross-country from school in Marlborough through water meadows. @williammorrissocuk.bsky.social

Our new book grew out of a fruitful gathering in Sweden last year, where we shared our research on Ruskin, Morris, Ashbee - and discussed the international reach of their ideas.
We look at houses & gardens & transformed lives.
