A tempting option, but instead I’ll probably just continue reading stuff that emotionally devastates me when I’m already feeling down

Also known as the one thing truly being forced on you at Dorley

The only reasonable exception is if you’re changing your infant’s diaper and the baby changing room is also just the bathroom
July 14, 2025 at 3:21 PM
Completely reasonable, that’s the sort of thing that fouls at least part of my mood for several days. There are even times when people have maligned me or put words in my mouth that were so out of line that they’ll manage to pop into my mind years later and ruin my mood for a while

I’m so glad this is such a completely outlandish idea, imagine if such pressures and incentives existed in real life
July 14, 2025 at 2:29 PM
What the hell, that’s a completely absurd jump for someone to make
July 14, 2025 at 2:21 PM
Actually I’m an idiot and I got the wrong day because the conversation I thought of happened on Saturday and my weekend just bled together
July 14, 2025 at 2:18 PM
Almost certainly not the same conversation, I think we were just managing to talk past each other about pretty much the same idea in the RCBG thread on the mugcord just like 10 minutes before your post.

However I have read and enjoyed a few stories about an interesting setting and that don’t really have characters in a normal way, so there are exceptions

So in that way a character could be a deeply unlikable, “evil”, or repugnant person and still be a likable character.

And if a story has no characters that I find at all compelling I see little reason to read the story.

If this is about the convo I think it is:
I was working from the idea that a character who you find interesting, want to see grow, or is otherwise compelling in some way is a character that you like, and doesn’t necessarily overlap with “if this character were a person would I like them”

Honestly, between the utter lack of thinking about society's hostility to queer existence and the clear SHAME dripping off those who think TOO MUCH about the Principle Omelette Commandment, I cannot take this topic seriously. You are ashamed of being queer but that is not our problem.

Cry alone.

Anything can be annoying to communicate if you pester someone who doesn't want to be pestered or are a bit of a clueless nag about it, but the concept of "some of us are bad at conversations" should be "We Must Collectively Agree That It's Bad To Talk About Queerness With The Normals".

Piss off.

You cannot base your entire attitude towards the act of recognizing our own, of wanting to spare people the pain of burial and remaining unnamed, unrecognized that a too-great majority of us went through, on whether or not you think it's rude to bring it up over lunch. Be serious.

I have to use the word because it fucking applies, sorry: Epistemicidal!

We mostly live in societies that are epistemicidal towards queer identity, history, and ways of living, because they're oriented around patriarchy and heterosexuality. A lot of us are told being queer is a sin. Grow up? THINK?
