Writer, reader, runner, mum, knitter. I like coffee, cake and conkers. I miss the sea.
New cushion sits nicely with the actual books and gives Avery the Axolotl a nice landing spot if she falls. Thanks @gailmyerscough.co.uk - it looks great!

The stats from @thestorygraph.com aren't a bit skewed as one book I started last November and put down one essay before the end. It does not usually take me 33 days to finish a book...

I celebrated my birthday with a mammogram. Happy birthday!

Most important Belgian purchase complete. McVities have discontinued them, the rogues.

Congratulatory post-half marathon chocolate cake from the Mr.

Blue tinge from #universitychallenge where I am shouting at the dawdling by the Strathclyde team. But at least I got the music round questions.

Started this last night. Promising beginning.

What a lovely evening with @damianbarr.bsky.social at the splendid Bromley House Library this evening. V much looking forward to reading The Two Roberts. And thanks to @polisloizou.bsky.social for such an excellent interviewing technique.

As suspected, my diligence in catching everything I read this year in this thread has fallen way off. Here's book 90 of the year. I have questions. But also, I don't mind that they can't/won't be answered. A fabulous unsettling strange snapshot.

First conkers of the year. Plaster courtesy of me falling over in spectacular slow mo while out running this morning.

Have a big pile of non fiction to get through so started this, which I'm enjoying v much.

Happy with this.

Morning! I'm rereading Mansfield Park for the first time in years and I don't think I've disliked an Austen hero as much as I dislike Edmund Bertram. What a blind mother hen irritant he is.

And book 80 of the year so far, a fast easy read despite the potentially harrowing subject matter.

Really enjoyed this - thanks to everyone who recommended it. A Croatian coming of middle age story. #booksky

Reads of 2025 - managed 7 books this week. Here's book 78 of the year. Minimal Smiley. Interdepartmental spy rivalry, as if the Cold War wasn't enough.

And finished Homesick this morning. Really good. Angry but not ranty, political and personal.

The mass reading holiday continues. Finished this yesterday. Excellent though I doubt I'm clever enough for it.
August 6, 2025 at 6:05 PM
Another holiday read. All about ageing, death and unresolved family issues. I know how to relax. But I enjoyed this v much.
August 5, 2025 at 5:28 PM
Holiday reads to continue this thread. This was, shall we say, odd and leave it there?

21 years ago today. This was before the huge thunderstorm that drenched many guests. Anyway, it seems both a ludicrously long time and no time at all. Happy anniversary Mr Barsby. Xx

A post rain walk around the tiny village we're holidaying in and we discover Dick King Smith in the churchyard. Daggie Dogfoot was a favourite of mine.
August 4, 2025 at 4:12 PM
Just finished The Ministry of Time and halfway through this. On holiday so have piles of books with me.

Reads of 2025: number 73. A snapshot of Britain in 2016, which already feels like a gentler time. #booksky
