It’s also not as if it is widely seen as an asset or even a net neutral. In plenty of places, a PhD on your resume is viewed as a negative!

Major increases in cost, even when adjusted for inflation, contributing to at least two other trends: (1) cost lends itself to narratives of elitism and (2) changing expectations about what education should provide to be a “good” ROI that frame some “culture war” attack on the humanities.
