The US wasn’t “prompted” to invade Haiti and install a brutal military occupation so much as it actively planned for it, helping create conditions to make invasion seem necessary. The Farnham Plan (named for a VP of now-Citibank) to occupy Haiti was already in place when President Sam was lynched.
"The elegant mansion was built at the end of the 19th century as the private residence of the family of a former Haitian president who was killed by a mob, prompting the United States to occupy Haiti for 19 years. The United States Marines converted it into a hospital during the occupation, which lasted from 1915 to 1934."

I crossed paths with Mohammad al-Zaqzouq at New Alphabet School in Berlin (of all places) a couple years back. He writes from Gaza: arablit.org/2024/10/30/m...
I remember—a distant childhood memory—a time when we were at the beach. It was one of the few times that we were allowed to actually go into the water. I remember that we approached the sea with fear and apprehension, and that, every time a wave came, my grandmother would dip our heads into the water. That strange ritual, known as "the seven waves," seemed to me imbued with wonder, with the secrets of the sea. My grandmother would dip our heads into every wave, for seven consecutive waves. This repeated immersion in the waves is believed to help release anguish and distress, to melt away any clouds of sorrow trapped in the body. The waves ebb and flow, each one carrying away some of the sadness and pain, some of the dark sediment that has built up in the soul. Wave after wave, the darkness begins to dissolve, to be carried far away into the vastness of the sea. Now, as I stood watching people, young and old, dipping their heads into the waves, I wondered: what sea can melt away all this sorrow? The war was raging with full force; death was knocking down doors and breaking into every home. We were drowning in the ocean of our loss, in an unprecedented path of bereavement and mutilation. What sea can possibly swallow up all of these moans, all of this pain, all of these atrocities?

In this sense, it would be naive to think of the University as outside of this apparatus that the State manipulates and manages. Universities belong to the apparatus, to the system of domination through which the National States extends its little fingers to achieve its aims, seeking data, knowledge, and all the input that it obviously needs to sustain itself and remain informed about how best to govern our differences, our diversity.

Cedric Robinson on the 19th century emergence of modern nationalism
"The emergence of nationalism was again neither accidental nor unrelated to the character that European capitalism had assumed historically. Again, the bourgeoisie of particular cultures and political structures refused to acknowledge their logical and systemic identity as a class. Instead, international capitalism persisted in competitive anarchy—each national bourgeoisie opposing the others as ‘natural' enemies. But as powerful as the bourgeoisie and its allies in the aristocracy and bureaucracy might be in some ways, they still required the co-optation of their ‘rational' proletariat in order to destroy their competitors. Nationalism mobilized the armed might they required to either destroy the productive capacities of those whom they opposed, or to secure new markets, new labor, and productive resources. Ultimately, the uneven developments of national capitalisms would have horrifying consequences for both Europe and the peoples under European dominations. In Germany and Italy, where national bourgeoisies were relatively late in their formation, the marshaling of national social forces (peasants, farmers, workers, clerics, professional classes, the aristocracy, and the state) was accomplished by the ideological phantasmagoria of race, Herrenvolk, and nationalism. This compost of violence, in its time, became known under the name of fascism. With the creation of fascism, the bourgeoisie retained the full range of its social, political, and economic prerogatives. It had the cake of the total control of its national society, an efficient instrument for expanding its domination and expropriation to the Third World, and the ultimate means for redressing the injuries and humiliations of the past.
