In April, SurveyUSA debuted a trackable "Optimism Index," asking US adults if they felt "optimistic and excited" or "hopeless and defeated" about the country. +3 in April, but -2 today, a 5-point swing toward pessimism.

24% say ICE should be eliminated as a federal agency, including 40% of Democrats, compared with 26% of independents and 5% of Republicans. Another 18% say ICE should be reduced in size – a combined total of 42% who want the agency to shrink or disappear entirely.

By 15-Point Margin, Americans Say ICE Focusing on Wrong People:

55% say things in the US are off on the wrong track, with just 1/3 saying things are headed in the right direction. When those who say things are on the wrong track are asked if they'll get worse before they get better, sentiment is near-universal and pessimistic.

77% say they and their family are taxed too much; just 5% say they aren't taxed enough. When asked about the wealthiest people in America, those numbers flip, with 65% saying billionaires aren't taxed enough and 15% saying billionaires are taxed too much.

Just 28% say they feel Democrats have a clear strategy for opposing Trump in Washington, and almost the same number, 27%, feel Democratic leadership has given them direction on how to oppose Trump themselves.

By an overwhelming majority, 76% to 20%, Dems say their representatives in Congress should fight harder against Trump's agenda, not find ways to compromise with the administration. Support for compromise is anemic across the board.

Just 23% of Dem voters say the party's response to Trump's 2nd term has so far been either excellent (7%) or good (16%); 68% have a negative view, with 25% calling the response "only fair," 22% "poor," and 21% saying it is "unacceptable." 31% of Latino Dems say the party's response is unacceptable.

38% of voters today say they feel "optimistic and excited" about the country, narrowly edging out the 35% who say they feel "hopeless and defeated." Subtracting "hopeless and defeated" from "optimistic and excited" produces our "Optimism Index," at +3 today.
