The point I'm trying to make is that this is a complex system of systems with multiple hazards, many of which have not been considered (e.g. speed limits, road design, lighting, emergency response etc). A focus on a single cause may improve things, consideration of whole-system safety is essential.

I do agree that large SUVs are the major cause (you only have to compare their mass and frontal geometry to see this), but pedestrian distraction may be a factor. The frequency of jaywalking has noticeably increased and someone paying less attention will be less likely/able to react quickly.

It would be interesting if pedestrian distraction was also a factor. I'm seeing an increase in near misses on my bike caused by people stepping out into the road without looking because they are either staring at their phones or are trying to listen for traffic whilst having headphones on.

I saw this too! It came up from the trees above Sully Brook and then disappeared high over the west lake (in your direction by the sounds of it).
