some plurbius predictions (see alt text) detailed discussion of eps 1+2 below i think the hive-mind is basically sincere and doesn't have a straightforward "ulterior motive." the aliens who sent the RNA sequence might or might not i think carol spends most of the first season trying to undo the hive-mind but won't really have an impact on it. if the hive-mind is threatened or reversed it will be through other causes (material consequences, alien intervention, random chance). if it is carol who does it, i think it will have to do with her finishing her “serious” novel i think the marquee “themes” of the whole thing are going to be - trust, how carol’s trauma informs her cynicism about the hive-mind as contrasted w/ the other characters w/ support systems, prisoner’s dilemma, leap of faith, etc - ethics, the hive-mind so far being stringently anti-utilitarian and how far they can get with that given the advantage of a more-or-less collective will one-episode-sized problems: - feeding everyone/reconfiguring global food production once all the already-killed meat is eaten or spoiled - other ecological consequences of non-interference with animals - what does human hive-mind reproduction look like season-sized problems: - people falling out of the hive mind as immune systems catch up - where are the aliens? how many other aliens are there? are the aliens coming too or just the rna sequence? are the aliens okay?

i started thinking this way about like gaming controllers and headphones but now learning it also applies to health insurance plans
this is to me an example of a "reddit feature," a novel, quantifiable feature that stands out on a spec sheet & gets the thing it's in a lot of word of mouth for having that feature, completely detached from the actual experience of using the thing to do the task it's meant to do
