His current project has to be perfect.

While he’s not as picky as Viktor when it comes to prioritizing form over function, he does still prefer the most direct and structurally sound designs when crafting. Unfortunately, this particular piece is all about form. The curves of this plate of metal have been painstakingly coaxed into something familiar, but not quite right, so he keeps trying, heating and reheating the metal on repeat.

Suddenly, he takes the mask out of the forge, waits for it to cool, stares.

And the machine herald stares back at him.

Or, Jayce being very happy with his wonderful new post-canon life except for the part where the human brain deals poorly with trauma sometimes. Follow-up to previous work, won’t mean much without reading it first.

Commentary: Iron Lung is Viktor-centric, focusing on his recovery from being thrown out of the Arcane. It is very well-written and Viktor’s narration is hilarious. Scar Tissue is a Jayce-centric one-shot focusing on his PTSD post S2 and his own relationship with the concept of perfection.

Instead of being sent back to kill Viktor, the mage sends Jayce back in time to the event that started it all. Jayce standing on the ledge of his blown-up apartment, and Viktor interrupting him. Jayce must decide on either ending this all before it can start, or try it all again, hoping he can do it right this time. Even if that means letting Viktor go.

AKA s2 Jayce gets set back in time in his s1 body (like Ekko in the alternate reality) and tries to not screw everything up again.

Commentary: Another time-travel fix-it, Jayce is going THROUGH IT and, being in early s1, Viktor is trying to figure out Jayce’s backstory. Unfortunately on indefinite hiatus; you should read it anyway.

When a new disaster befalls Piltover and Zaun, seemingly triggered by the events surrounding the Hexcore, Caitlyn, Vi, Jayce and Viktor reunite to investigate - but not all their scattered allies are lost, and not all their conflicts have been resolved.

Commentary: Only one chapter, but a very interesting start. Jayce with PTSD, Viktor still wrestling with his perfectionism, and the beginnings of a plot!

“Ooh, arcanescape is a great word!” Jayce looked around the void like he was searching for a misplaced pen. “Man, I wish we had a chalk board or something we could start writing our observations out on.”

“Maybe if you ask nicely, the void will give you one,” Viktor offered, dripping sarcasm.

“Since this is your arcanescape,” Jayce retorted, far too much sass in his words for a man who was about to get his arcane ass beat if he didn’t stop running his mouth. “I think you would need to be the one to ask nicely.”

“If I am asking the arcane for anything in this moment, it is my cane. So that I may wack you with it.”

Viktor and Jayce wake up in the arcane void, nothing but the haunting glimmer of all their mistakes for company. But being trapped in the arcane plane is far better than being dead, and far, far better than losing each other again. aka: soft bois do gay cosmic science and fall (even more) in love.

Commentary: Viktor and Jayce wake up in the Arcane post-canon and solve the mystery of where they are! The Arcane void also reflects their thoughts, so there’s some character study. Highly recommended, a unique post-canon concept.

The shape of a man takes a familiar form the closer he gets, but also foreign in his haggard state. And there is a touch of death to him, a smell of decay only the arcane can bring upon a person, and yet the first words out of his mouth are, “Viktor, are you okay?”

If Viktor could get his construct to laugh, he would probably be laughing now, the miserable kind that might bring with itself tears. But he doesn’t remember how to do any of that.

OR: The arcane chews them up and spits them out somewhere unknown and far away from home. Jayce is dying and Viktor can’t let that happen, but there are significant obstacles in his way. One, his power is diminished. Two, his touch is making Jayce’s condition worse. Three, there’s something wrong with him, too.

Commentary: There’s not a lot of fics exploring Jayce’s physical health after all the Arcane corruption, which I appreciate in this fic, but my main joy comes from the Viktor characterization and its interpretation the hexcore’s influence on his actions (spoiler: brainwashing is my least favourite reason for villainy)

Viktor turns to him then, a rare look of utter bewilderment spread across his sharp features.

Jayce and Viktor wake up after their not-quite-final act in the arcane to find themselves in an abandoned Piltover. They must figure out how to survive in bodies that no longer feel like theirs and reconcile who their experiences have made them with the people they remember themselves to be.

Or: Another post-canon fic but give it a splash of TLOU and a big dose of angst and guilt.

Commentary: No zombies, just the boys exploring an empty post-apocalyptic world. Unless…

(no but seriously, no zombies. Good characterization, I like the focus on Jayce dealing with his new disability. And there’s post-apocalypse worldbuilding!)

Commentary: This is a cute and fluffy adventure fic that includes Jayce and Viktor dealing with some of their s2 (and normal backstory) trauma. There’s also a very funny section regarding how people perceive Jayce and Viktor post-canon that I really enjoyed.

He retrieves the mandolin from the floor and sets about pulling it from its case while Jayce eats.

“I thought it was beautiful,” he continues, “and I remembered seeing one in your apartment the night we met, so I was certain you could help me to learn to play it.”

There’s a wicked grin on his face, one that Jayce knows well. It’s the smile he had on his face the night they met, the one that promised everything if Jayce just reached out and took it. He’s not sure what Viktor is promising with his smile now, but despite all his doubts, Jayce knows already that he wants everything his partner could ever offer.

Jayce may have lost most of his hearing and a lot of his mobility, but Viktor helps remind him that not all new things have to hurt with the help of a mandolin.

Commentary: Jayce mandolin mention! Also a unique concept - Deaf Jayce is very rare, and the author tied it in very well to canon events. The last part of a series: I recommend going through the entire series here.

Abstract: Jayce Talis was the founder of Hextech, a short-lived proprietary technology that was a revolutionary blend of science and magic. He, along with his now-named partner, Viktor, created the Hexgates, the now-defunct rapid transit that put Piltover on the map. Talis was an inventor during the fraught period of time when tensions between Piltover and the Undercity (as Zaun was called then), began to boil over, leading to a brief stint as a Councilor, where he attempted to keep the Hexgates and Piltover safe. Encompassing his time during those years which included the Council Bombing, and culminated into the Battle of Piltover, the Jayce Talis papers (inclusive dates: 959-995, bulk dates: 980-991) include materials related to his early childhood and personal interests, the founding of Hextech and unreleased inventions, the Hexgates, a deeper look into his previously unknown partner’s life, and what the world thought of him, both during and after his presumed death after the Battle of Piltover.

Commentary: a wonderfully unique take post-canon, this is written in the form of archival notes in the future. I am a slut for epistolary fics and fictional events written through an academic lens. This is a great example of one.

Even with all his power and all the time in the world, Viktor was still only human. Maybe he did miss something. An offshoot, lonely in its own right, quiet and open and waiting and wanting—

“Jayce?” Viktor whispered into the air.

And, in Viktor’s mind, he heard a reply, instantaneous and desperate: Viktor.

The air seized in Viktor’s lungs. He brought both hands to his staff, clutching it just as desperately as the voice that’d rung out in his mind, to keep himself steady. The warmth roiled through him, and, no, it wasn’t just warm, it was hot. It was burning.

Jayce pushed himself up from the couch and stopped in his tracks when he noticed something out of the corner of his eyes.

Or rather, someone.

This is not possible, Jayce thought. And yet, there, in the middle of his flat was—

“Jayce?” Viktor asked.

Set after the end of season 02.

After all that happened, Jayce struggles with his survival, Viktor’s survival as nothing but an astral ghost, the question on how to continue a life (and love) he never expected to have — and also, building a robot body.

Commentary: Another fun and unique take of the Jayce-and-Viktor revive post-canon fic. Here, Viktor is a ghost and we get to see Jayce and Viktor do science! in Piltover again. And Jayce gets to stay with his mom! This fic and the previous three all explore how Piltover would see Jayce (and Viktor) post-war, which is always slightly different per author and it’s always fascinating to see what changes and what stays the same.

Weeks after Jayce wakes up on the roof of the Hexgates alone save for a mildly concussed Ekko, he is still in mourning for his partner, seemingly lost to the Arcane. Jayce is still grieving when alarms sound out over the city. Something has been spotted on the horizon—a giant metal construct with strange gold and greyish-purple skin—and it’s headed right towards Piltover.

Commentary: This writer consistently writes absolute bangers. A very unique post-canon AU where Jayce stays in Piltover and Viktor is … dead? This has Jayce angst, Jayce and Vi friendship, and fun hexclaw antics.

Jayce and Viktor vanish from the roof of the Hexgate and reappear thirty years later completely unchanged: Jayce still bruised and broken, Viktor still behind the Machine Herald's mask.
Meanwhile, the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun have continued on without them. Science and magic meet in startling ways, the dead rise, and foreign political powers threaten to undermine the work done to recover from the battle three decades prior. Veteran champions struggle to protect the city's foundations while young, upstart rebels fight to determine its future. The waters are rising, the forests are evolving, and the peoples of Runeterra are finding new ways to make old mistakes.

And, in the middle of it all, Jayce and Viktor figure out how to be.

Commentary: I lost this for so long and I'm so happy I found it (from someone else reccing the fic for this event!) The author themself said that this was a "a Jayce/Viktor fic masquerading as an exploration into the direction that Piltover and Zaun would head after the close of the series" and they're not exaggerating. Amazing worldbuilding of post-Arcane Piltover and Zaun, a great political plot, Jayce dealing with the idolatry after the final battle and his new disability, Viktor dealing with the consequences of his actions and his new Arcane Herald body... this fic is amazing, you need to read it.

On an expedition into the ruins of what was once the city-state of Piltover, historian Elora discovers two mages, Mel Medarda and Jayce Talis, who have been under a sleeping spell for four hundred years. She insists on bringing the possibly radioactive ancient mages back to her home in the Freljord. Because there's something pulling Elora towards Mel, who speaks as if they already know each other. It's probably the same thing that pushes Jayce towards a professor called Viktor.

Or: Mel and Jayce meet the reincarnations of Elora and Viktor and get a second chance, centuries after the events of Arcane s02e09.

Commentary: technically more of a post-canon AU, but most of my recs are going to be that anyway and I wanted to rec this earlier in the week because I really love it. Jayvik and Melora, with Jayce & Mel friendship. They get punted forward 400 years and have to deal with the consequences. Lots of Mel character exploration and Jayce has magic! An incredibly unique concept; Elora is a historian here, so there’s also an element of Mel and Jayce reciting their history to her that I love.

Human eyes. As human as the rest of his body, as far as Jayce can tell - he looks just like he remembers Viktor from the anomaly, after his mask had shattered.

| Six weeks after the war ends, Jayce reappears. Seven weeks after the war ends, he resumes his duties as Councilor, tasked with maintaining the fragile peace between the twin cities. But Jayce is spiraling, and his anchor is locked up in Stillwater.

Commentary: This is the intense, ultimate Jayce has PTSD fic. And it includes Jayce having problems with food and his hallucinations. And it has a good plot! We get class tensions, Jayce hating being a councilor... read it, it has so much to enjoy.

Viktor doesn’t want to be here. It had taken a lot of pleading, losing a bet, and even more pleading before Jayce had managed to drag him to the party, so, yes, of course he’s miserable.

Not that Jayce expected him not to be, though, to be fair to his partner. In all his begging he had verbally batted away Viktor’s attempts to put the words you’ll enjoy it when you get there into his mouth with an insistence that he doesn’t even enjoy these evenings much. And that Viktor owes him at least one, please, Vik, even if you hate it.

So, Viktor caved. And now he’s here. Hating every boring second.

Commentary: I usually point out ways in which fics are unique. This fic is mostly set in S1 and explores the fallout from Ximena saying Jayce wasn’t in his right mind to the Piltover council, and how that might affect the way people look at Hextech and Jayce’s position as (one of) its founders. Very well written, highly recommended.

As the days and weeks go by, Jayce realizes, the house might be bigger than it seems (and Viktor might be closer that he thought).

Commentary: A very well-written psychological horror fic. Genuinely scary, and there’s some very fun fourth-wall fuckery later on that is just wonderful.
