An excerpt from a work-in-progress by A. Lee Welles: By the end of the encore I was flushed and sweaty. Tired, but adrenaline was still surging through me. I stood, grabbing my sticks and brushes, and turned toward backstage. And fell into space, because instead of the low of drum riser my muscle memory expected, I was on top of a fucking pedestal taller than I was. Time seemed to slow. I couldn’t do anything, my limbs weren’t responding to my demands for them to move, move, and get my feet under me. But somehow I had plenty of time to be chagrined—I hadn’t so much as tripped climbing down in rehearsals, not once—and fearful—if I snapped a wrist I’d have to leave the tour, but that wasn’t even the worst-case scenario. And then Danny was miraculously there, dropping his bass, turning toward me, opening his arms. He staggered back, but he got a hand under my thigh and one around my shoulder, and my legs went around him. I could tell myself it was just momentum and gravity, that brought our mouths together, but something else that held us there. My mouth remembered his, and his remembered mine. We fit together, just like we had before we flew apart. He tasted clean and fresh, like he hadn’t in a long time, and his tongue, sweet Christ, was alive and alert. The hand under my butt supported me firmly, and his other moved to cup the back of my head. My legs hooked around his waist—more muscle memory at work.

It may not be obvious what an adorable trim size this has, and how nice it will look nestled on your shelf alongside other books. Viz:
"A Bloomy Head" by Juniper Butterworth is shelved between two trade paperbacks by KJ Charles, and mass market paperbacks by Megan Frampton, Sarah Maclean, and Olivia Waite. It is the shortest of all the books. Complaints about the filing system that produces this ordering will be cheerfully ignored.

The essay is by Katherine MacLean, and it’s featured in “The Craft of Science Fiction” (1976) ed. Reginald Bretnor:
An excerpt from “Alien Minds and Nonhuman Intelligences” by Katherine MacLean: A creature living in a thousand-degree temperature by a lava lake would consider eight hundred degrees very, very cold—two hundred blow normal. If you approach him in our burnable metal ship you’d be considered very strange. Hal Clement has dealt with this kind of relativity often and well. A fish-shaped creature of tungsten swimming in the lava lake with organs of vibration developed to “see” through the liquid would consider Excerpt from “Alien Minds and Nonhuman Intelligences” by Katherine MacLean concludes: itself a fish swimming in cool transparent water. A fish does not know what it is made of. To it, anything the right temperature for its physique is “coo,” anything it can see through is “clear.” Evolution repeats the same good mechanical designs at many levels and sense adapt to bring in needed information in the same coded terms that our senses bring it in. Social customs are the product of group living and its needs.

Not really the point but this typo breaks my brain. Holiday weak? what?
A headline from forbes.com says "Target Predicting Week Holiday Sales As Consumer Angst Weighs on Season" with subhead "Target said it doesn't think holiday sales will be enough to turn around a tough year." They mean "weak," not "week." It's been corrected on the site, but the original version is enshrined in the permalink.
