In Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in the High Castle”, one of the characters is in a meeting when he suddenly realises “There is evil. It’s real, like cement” and has to leave the room in order not to throw up.

Solitude is necessary to recharge your batteries so that you can deal effectively with other people. So not selfish. When I was a frazzled new mum a health visitor said to me “You can’t pour from an empty cup” and I have never forgotten those wise words!
